Hemorrhoids or piles are ugly faces of an ailment. The condition of varicosity or swelling and inflammation of veins in the rectum and anus is what this problem consists of.

The two most common types of are external and internal.

External : Occur outside at the lateral end of the anal canal, on the anal verge. They are sometimes painful, and can be accompanied by swelling and irritation. Itching, due to skin irritation, is considered a common symptom. It becomes a thrombosed sort if the vein ruptures and a blood clot develops.

Internal: Internal occur inside the rectum. They are usually not painful, and most people aren’t aware that they have them. Internal may bleed when irritated. If not treated, internal types may lead to the more severe form – the prolapsed and strangulated type.

• Prolapsed : Internal hemorrhoids become so expanded or swollen that they get pushed outside of the anus.

• Strangulated: The anal sphincter muscle spasms and traps a prolapsed type outside of the anal opening. The supply of blood is cut off, and it then becomes a strangulated hemorrhoid.

Causes:

The major cause results from weak rectal vein walls and/or valves. The following are some other causes:

• Constipation
• Chronic diarrhea
• Straining during bowel movements
• Postponing bowel movements
• Poor bathroom habits; sitting for unusually long periods of time, e.g. reading on the toilet or excessive cleaning attempts.
• Pregnancy
• Fiber-deprived diet can also contribute.
• Insufficient hydration: drinking less water or drinking too much of diuretic liquids such as coffee or colas can cause a hard stool that can lead to irritation.
• Tumors in the pelvis also cause enlargement of this problem by pressing on veins draining upwards from the anal canal.
• An excess of lactic acid in the stool: a product of excessive consumption of milk products such as cheese can cause irritation and a reduction of consumption can bring relief.
• Too much pressure on the rectal veins due to poor posture or muscle tone; obesity and a sedentary lifestyle may cause this issue.

Prevalence:

They commonly occur in both sexes, but only 4% of the general population experience the problem. They are a common occurrence between 45 and 65 years of age.

Approximately one half of all Americans are estimated to have this condition by the age of 50, but only a small number undertake medical treatment. About 500,000 people are medically treated for hemorrhoids annually, with 10 to 20% of them requiring surgeries.

Hemorrhoids (sometimes called ‘piles’) are small lumps of tissue composed of blood vessels, muscle, and elastic fibers. They are always present in the anal canal, just past the anus. It is only when they become inflamed and enlarged that they cause problems.

They are not choosy when they pick their victims. Men and women are equally affected, though those between the ages of 40 and 60 seem to have a higher rate of this problem, as well as pregnant women.

They are not inherently dangerous unless they bleed continually. Their location means that they are fed by arterial blood, so those who have a hard time clotting or have a lowered immune system may consider hemorrhoids a more serious problems than others. Caused by poor diet and straining to pass bowel movements when constipated, they are easier to prevent than they are to treat.

Prevention is as simple as eating right. Leafy green vegetables, beets, apples, whole grains and other foods high in fiber are a great start. Fiber is the greatest defense against constipation. Herbal supplements like psyllium seed help as well, if your diet is poor. Start with small doses, though, and work your way up. Adding prune juice to your diet is helpful as well.

Drinking plenty of liquids that are non-caffeinated will also help constipation fade quickly if they do appear, keeping the inflammation to a minimum. Simple things like keeping the area clean and wiping gently with non-perfumed, non-colored toilet paper will help the hemorrhoids heal more quickly.

If you have hemorrhoids, it is important to learn what they are and how to treat them. There are specific symptoms and signs to look for to alert you as to whether you need to seek treatment or not. Knowing what these are will help you to know what treatment to look for. It is also important to learn where to seek help and to understand that these i ssues are very common for men and women and affect nearly 50% of the population.

They are also known as Piles. They are found in the blood vessels close to the rectum and anus. The presence of this problem indicates that blood vessels in those areas have been stretched due to pressure. In this sense, they are similar to varicose veins found in the legs. They can be caused by added strain on the blood vessels related to bowel movements.

They are normally found in two areas. They are found in the skin area of the rectum, and in being located here are known as the internal type. The other type found in the skin next to the anus are known as external . Similar conditions that may exist in different areas may be a sign of digestive disease and should be seen by a doctor.

These issues are typically diagnosed by bleeding in the areas of the rectum and anus. This bleeding is caused by pressure from blood vessels. Other symptoms may also help in diagnosing. Inconsistent bowel movements, pain, itching, and severe discomfort in the region are all typical of the existence of this particular problem. It is recommended that your symptoms be checked by a doctor. It should also be pointed out that bleeding may also be a result of other digestive diseases.

They may occur for several reasons. Pregnant women may develop them due to quick changes in weight. They are common among those who are constipated or have difficult bowel movements that cause pressure. Pressure in this area for prolonged periods can directly cause the problem as well.

Once you have had this ailment, you will likely have them again, though symptoms typically clear up and disappear on their own. More serious versions will need medication and possibly surgery depending on the conditions associated with them. Over the counter medications may help to alleviate symptoms that are not severe as a temporary measure until medical treatment can be given.

It is important to know what they are, how they occur, and how treatment can help you. Understanding the seriousness of the problem and the consequences on you health and well being will help you in seeking the appropriate treatment. Hemorrhoids are very common and can easily be diagnosed and treated. The proper treatment can help you return to a normal lifestyle and take control of this problem.

Being afflicted by hemorrhoids is no laughing matter. The pain and itching associated with the condition can be embarrassing as well as distracting. There are a variety of solutions to help you overcome this problem and we’ll discuss some of your options here.

Exactly what are they? In short, it refers to a condition in which the veins around the lower rectum or anus are swollen and inflamed. They can be found internally within the anus or externally around the anus.

The condition is often worsened as sufferers attempt to make a bowel movement. Other causes include: diarrhea, anal intercourse, pregnancy, constipation, and aging.

Signs are observed through blood on toilet tissue, as well as blood found in and around the toilet bowl. A lump or painful swelling around the anus can be a physical sign as well as extreme itching in the same area.

There are two methods you can try to actively reduce or eliminate the condition:

1. Apply a hemorrhoidal cream or suppository to the area affected.

2. Warm tub baths, several times a day, in plain water.

To prevent future attacks you can take the following steps:

1. If constipation is a problem for you, increase your fiber intake to bring on smoother bowel movements.

2. Cut back on caffeine as coffee and similar products may exacerbate the problem.

3. Exercise regularly.

In severe cases you may require a physician’s intervention. Your doctor may suggest that affected tissue be burned or removed altogether. Other options include rubber band ligation or the injection of a chemical solution to alleviate the condition.

Some cases simply go away on their own. In all cases you can control and even eliminate hemorrhoids by following the steps outlined for you.

Some people who have anal fissures think their pain is caused by hemorrhoids and vice versa. Here we’ll try to explain the difference.

An anal fissure is, simply stated, a small tear or cut in the lining of the anus. They are generally caused by straining while on the toilet or by constipation. Sometime fissures are related to severe bouts of diarrhea. Fissures can be quite painful, especially during a bowel movement when the fissure is stretched. There will be red blood streaking the stool if you have one.

Over 90% of fissures will heal without surgery. Recommendations to help prevent recurrence are increasing the fiber intake in your diet. This can be best achieved by taking an over the counter fiber supplement. Drink plenty of water to help keep your stools soft. Some take stool softeners, but do not take them for a longer period of time than is suggested by the manufacturer. Warm sitz baths can help ease the pain. Sit in a few inches of warm water for 15 minutes two to three times a day. When you wipe, use a cotton ball or pad soaked in witch hazel. You can buy pre moistened wipes in your drug store. Some who suffer with fissures are prescribed topical cortisone creams. Tylenol and Ibuprofen can help ease the pain.

Hemorrhoids are a very common medical ailment that affect both men and women. It is an enlarged or swollen anal vein. As with anal fissures, hemorrhoids develop due to bad bathroom habits, such as sitting on the toilet for prolonged periods or straining. You will notice bright red blood with this condition. You may suffer from internal or external types. Generally internal types, which appear higher up in the anus are not painful, and only cause bleeding. It’s when an internal one prolapses, or drops outside of the anus and becomes what is know as an external version that it becomes painful and problematic.

Like anal fissures, symptoms can be helped by sitz baths, wiping with cotton soaked with witch hazel, taking stool softeners, drinking more water, and increasing the fiber in your diet with a fiber supplement. There are numerous over the counter medications that can help relieve symptoms.

Please remember, not all rectal bleeding is due to hemorrhoids and fissures. If you experience any rectal bleeding it should be checked immediately by a physician.

In this article we will discuss hemorrhoid treatment.

In the medical world this problem is described as an enlarged or swollen vein. They are somewhat similar to varicose veins that develop in the legs, except that they are veins located in the anus. These veins cushion and protect the anal canal. Pain and problems occur when these veins are stretched and tear under pressure.

They are a very common medical problem seen in both men and women, usually over the age of 30, with most suffering from hemorrhoids between the ages of 45 and 65 years old. It is estimated that more than a half million people seek treatment for symptomatic this problem each year in the United States. Of this half million suffers, 10 to 20 percent will need surgical treatment.

Most medical professionals blame the formation of them on prolonged sitting on the toilet and chronic straining due to constipation. They are also very common during pregnancy, due to the strain from carrying the excess weight of the baby.

You may suffer from internal or external sorts. Generally internal hemorrhoids, which are located higher up in the anus are not painful, but you will notice bleeding. They will bleed bright red blood due to their abundance of arterial blood, which is different from the dark blood in your venous system. At times one will protrude from the anal canal. Usually these kinds, which are called prolapsed, can be gently pushed back inside. If not, a consultation with a specialist is necessary.

External sorts are those that are itchy and painful and really uncomfortable. If you experience external ones you will see bright red blood on the toilet paper, or in the toilet bowl after a bowel movement.

There are ways to relieve the discomfort of this condition. A sitz bath can help to relieve the discomfort of them. It is suggested that you sit in a tub of warm water for fifteen minutes several times a day. When you wipe, instead of toilet paper use pads soaked with witch hazel. You can buy these pads at any drug store. Application of any of the numerous over-the-counter preparations will help to relieve the discomfort and itching.

Prolonged periods of either standing, or sitting can aggravate the problem. Straining when you have a bowel movement is one of the chief causes of them, and will definitely make them worse and much more painful. Don’t do it. The cause of constipation may be not enough fiber in your diet. Take a fiber supplement.

Any rectal bleeding of any kind should be checked by your physician and then you should follow up with the proper hemorrhoid treatment.

Often called piles, they are swollen and inflamed veins in and around the anus and lower rectum. They are much like varicose veins you might see on a person’s legs.

They are a very common health problem. They cause serious problems in about 4% (over 10 million) of people in the United States. Prevalence of hemorrhoidal disease increases with age until the seventh decade and then diminishes slightly. They also increase in pregnancy due to direct pressure on the rectal veins.

This condition is caused by too much pressure in the rectum, forcing blood to stretch and swell the blood vessels. People whose parents had the disease may be more likely to get them.

Most common causes:

straining with bowel movements (from constipation or hard stools)

diarrhea

constant sitting

sitting on the toilet for a long time

childbirth

pressure of the fetus in pregnant women

heavy lifting

familial tendency

obesity

Symptoms

Symptoms include:

rectal bleeding

pain around the anus and rectum

irritation and itching

bulge or lump at the anus

Excessive straining, rubbing or cleaning the anus may worsen symptoms. In most cases, the symptoms of hemorrhoids will only last a few days. Not every one with this problem will experience symptoms.

Types

The type depends on where it occurs. There are two types: internal and external.

External develop around the rim of the anus. External cause most of the symptoms associated with piles in general (pain, burning, and itching) because the skin around them is very sensitive. If an external type becomes strangulated (cut off from blood supply), a clot can form in it and become an excruciatingly painful thrombosed hemorrhoid. Thrombosis of an external type causes an anal lump that is very painful and often requires medical attention.

Internal ones develop inside the passageway of the anus. Internal types are often present without causing any discomfort or even awareness of their presence. Internal types are usually painless, although they sometimes cause discomfort and bleeding if a hard stool rubs against them during a bowel movement. They also may prolapse outside the anus, where they appear as small, grape-like masses. These can be painful. This type will go back inside the rectum on its own, or you can gently press it back into the anus with your fingertips.

They are classified by the degree of tissue prolapse into the anal canal:

First-degree – ones that bleed but do not prolapse

Second-degree – ones that prolapse with straining or defecating and retract on their own

Third-degree – ones that prolapse and require manual reduction

Fourth-degree – ones that chronically prolapse and, if reducible, fall out again

Mixed types are confluent internal and external hemorrhoids.

Prevention

You often can prevent them by preventing constipation and straining to have bowel movements. Some of the following diet and lifestyle changes may help you to soften the stool, and avoid the straining that can lead to the problem:

Include more fiber in your diet – fresh fruits, leafy vegetables, and whole-grain breads and cereals are good sources of fiber.

Drink adequate amounts of fluids – 6 to 8 glasses of water daily.

Exercise regularly

Do not strain or sit on the toilet for long periods of time. Straining for more than 5 minutes can be harmful. Try not to stay on the toilet any longer than necessary.

Use a soothing wipe, such as baby wipes or witch hazel pads, to clean after each bowel movement and to ease the pain.

If your main job activity is seated, always stand or walk during your breaks. Make it a point to stand and walk at least 5 minutes every hour and try to shift frequently in your chair to avoid direct rectal pressure.

Avoid heavy lifting, which puts pressure on the anal opening.

Treatment

A number of surgical methods may be used to remove or reduce the size of piles:

Rubber band ligation – A rubber band is placed around the base of the affected tissue inside the rectum. The band cuts off circulation, and the lump withers away within a few days.

Sclerotherapy is one of the oldest forms of treatment. A chemical solution is injected directly into the affected tissue or the area around it. This solution causes a local reaction that interferes with blood flow inside the problem, making it shrink.

Laser or electro-coagulation techniques – Both techniques use special devices to burn hemorrhoidal tissue.

Cryotherapy uses cold temperatures to obliterate the veins and cause inflammation and scarring. It is more time consuming, associated with more post treatment pain, and is less effective than other treatments. Therefore, this procedure is not commonly used.

- Occasionally, extensive or severe internal or external sorts may require removal by surgery known as hemorrhoidectomy. This is the best method for permanent removal of this condition. It is the treatment for severe third-degree and fourth-degree sorts.

Sclerotherapy, ligation, and heat coagulation are all good options to consider for your hemorrhoid treatment.

Here we will discuss hemorrhoid treatment. These nasty buggers are actually varicose veins in the anus and rectum. They occur when blood vessels that are either inside the anus or around it become swollen. The more swollen they become, the more painful they are. They may cause bleeding, and their constant irritation could lead to itching. However, most often itching is a sign of pinworms or an overgrowth of Candida albicans.

The following can cause them: constipation, chronic diarrhea, straining when you go to the bathroom, and any pressure that contributes to congestion in veins in that area (like coughing, sneezing, or sitting or standing for long periods of time). But let’s face it, if you have strong blood vessels, sneezing and sitting won’t give you this affiliction.

The first step in most doctors’ approach to treating this problem is to suggest a high-fiber diet and bulking agents, such as Metamucil. Next, they typically suggest taking laxatives for constipation. The problem is that some of the herbs used in laxative formulas, such as senna leaf, are harsh and irritating. Instead, eat a higher fiber diet and take ground flaxseed if your intestines need a little help.

Daily sitz baths can reduce inflammation. Get a large plastic basin and put it in your bathtub. Put two to three inches of hot water (110-120 degrees) in the basin and sit in it for about 20 minutes. If possible, add some hotter water in the tub so your feet are warmer than your bottom. Bring a cold washcloth with you so you don’t get too warm. Afterward, take a cool shower or splash the area with cool water and gently dry well.

Topical anti-inflammatory suppositories (such as Anusol and Preparation H) may give temporary relief. But they don’t address the problem like some herbal formulas.

Ligation is a more drastic therapy where your doctor ties a small rubber band tightly at the base of an external type. This cuts off circulation and it falls off. Sometimes, it’s necessary to repeat this treatment.

Finally, surgery may be an option if your hemorrhoids are particularly large or painful, or if bleeding won’t stop. If you and your doctor think you have time to try other therapies, I have some safe suggestions.

An Integrative Approach To Healing:

Improve your sitz baths by adding a cup of strong anti-inflammatory chamomile or comfrey tea to the water. If you have spasms, try adding a dropper of valerian root tincture.

Two citrus bioflavonoids, diosmin and hesperidins, accelerated healing and reduced pain in a French study of 120 people with this affliction. A high amount of hesperidins is in the Hot Flash Formula I helped create (800-728-2288). If you have both hot flashes and piles, this formula would be ideal. It won’t hurt you if you don’t have hot flashes. Or take 1,000 mg of mixed bioflavonoids along with 500 mg or more of vitamin C.

Horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is an herb I’ve talked about before. It, and all other herbs suggested for this disease, are approved by the American Botanical Council’s Expanded Commission E Monographs for safety and efficacy. The ABC suggests a standardized extract containing 20 mg escin, its active ingredient. Horse chestnut is often combined with other herbs that improve circulation, such as bilberry and gingko. Dose: Use according to label instructions.

Butcher’s broom (Ruseus aculeatus) is used for fragile veins and varicose veins, as well as acute attacks of piles. It can both reduce pain and treat the source of the problem. Butcher’s broom is approved for the itching and burning from this issue. Dose: 7-11 mg of ruscogenin a day.

Witch hazel leaf (Hamamelis virginiana: This astringent herb has been approved both for inflammation and for this particular problem. You can use witch hazel both internally and topically. Drink an herb tea made from its bark and leaves two or three times a day between meals. Or apply an ointment or salve that contains witch hazel.

Now you have a good head start with information for your own hemorrhoid treatment.

Here is some more information for you to assimilate to make the most of your own hemorrhoid treatment.

With this condition the veins in or around the anus, or in the lower rectum are swollen and often also inflamed. If you have them inside the rectum are called internal type, and those in the anal area external ones. Studies have shown that 1 out of 3 persons below the age of 50 will suffer from this problem. 1 out of 2 persons over the age of 50 is affected by this condition.

THE SYMPTOMS

They give these symptoms:
-Swollen veins in the anal area or inside the rectum.
-Itching.
-Tears in the swollen veins and bleeding from the tears.
-Coagulated blood in the veins making hard lumps.
-They may lead to permanent lumps, scars or thickened area after the initial healing.

THE PROCESS THAT LEADS TO THIS PROBLEM

Before they form, there is usually an increased pressure in the veins of the anal area, for example due to over-filled intestines, due to constipation and thereby straining to get hard stool out during toilet visits, or due to frequent diarrhoea.

The veins have valves preventing the blood from flowing backwards. The increased pressure makes the segment of a vain right after a valve to swell up like a balloon.

The blood in the swollen vein segment then coagulates, making a hard lump that clogs the vein, and the clogged vein segment then gets infected and inflamed.

The inflamed hemorrhoids may then tear, so that the content empties and the vein bleeds. After emptying its content, the vein heals, but may develop a residing scar.

Other times the content is dissolved and the vein heals without rupturing, but also now a permanent thickened or hardened vein segment may form.

CAUSES

Since these are caused by conditions making increased pressure in the anal veins, like lazy colon, constipation or diarrhoea, the ultimate cause are factors causing these conditions. Such factors are:

-Lack of fibre in the daily diet
-Drinking too less water.
-Consuming too less fat, or the opposite too much fat.
-Lack of daily physical exercise.

Cramping or prolonged tension in the anal sphincter and the muscles around the rectal opening seems to restrict the blood stream from the anal area back towards the heart, and thus also contribute to this disease. Nervous or psychological processes may cause tension in these muscles.

They are a very common complication by pregnancy. The hormonal stimulation during pregnancy causes the vessels in the anal area to dilate. The weight of the foetus and the straining during childbirth will further cause a marked pressure increase in the already dilated vessels, with piles as a consequence.

Heavy muscular work or heavy lifting can increase the pressure in the anal vessels and contribute to the problem as well. Conditions that weaken the tissue in the anal area may also contribute to development , for example inflammations, allergies or high age.

HOW CAN YOU HEAL

Sometimes they require surgical or other medical intervention. However, in many cases you can do much yourself to prevent, alleviate or cure the condition. Since cancer or other serious conditions sometimes resemble piles or cause them, newly detected eruptions should always be medically investigated.

1. Lifestyle adjustments

Lifestyle measures to prevent or cure an inactive colon, an overfilled colon and constipation, will also help to prevent or cure this problem. Such measures are:

* A diet with enough fibre, containing whole corn cereals, whole corn bread, vegetables and fruit.
* Using natural oils in the food that gives the intestinal content a soft consistency, like olive oil, sunflower oil, rape oil and soy oil.
* Some daily exercise.
* Drinking enough water.

2. Agents to regulate the digestive function

You can use certain natural products to regulate your digestive functions and this will also help against developing this issue:

* Bran added to your diet has high fibre content, and will stimulate the intestines to contract better and pass its content more rapidly.
* Linen seeds will make the stool softer so that it is passed better through the intestines.

3. Topical balms or ointments

You can find topical balms on the market to apply onto the affected area. The balms contain ingredients that penetrate through the skin into the swollen blood vessels and anal muscles, or are transported through the tissue fluids upwards in the intestinal wall. Other ingredients remain on the affected area as a protecting and lubricating sheet. The effects of these ingredients are.

* Alleviating inflammation and itching.
* Stimulating tissue healing.
* Alleviating cramping in the rectal sphincter.
* Dissolving coagulated blood.
* Killing bacteria that cause infection in the affected area.
* Lubricating the rectal opening or the end part of the rectum to make the stool pass more easily.

4. Oral products

You can also find oral pills or capsules to help against this issue with the following effects:

* Giving the stool a greater volume so that the intestines manage better to get hold of it and work it through.
* Giving the stool a smoother consistency so that it passes more easily through the intestinal system and rectal opening.
* Alleviating cramping and irregular contractions in intestinal system.
* Stimulating the regular and effective contraction of the intestines.
* Alleviating inflammation and itching.
* Stimulating tissue healing.

5. Enemas

If there is a hard constipation aggravating the disease, a small enema can help to empty the colon and the rectum, and also help to cure them. However, big enemas can increase the intestinal pressure and aggravate the condition.

Now, setup your own personalized hemorrhoid treatment and stick with it!
